The Ovarian Cancer Screening Centre at 27 Fitzroy Square London W1 provides a specialist screening service directed by Professor Ian Jacobs who has spent over 20 years providing clinical care and undertaking research in this area. Professor Jacobs has worked to develop a strategy for Ovarian Cancer Screening which is able to detect the cancer before symptoms develop, in the hope that it will save lives. The centre also provides expertise in cervical cancer screening and gynaecological problems.

Ovarian cancer is responsible for 100,000 deaths per year worldwide and 7,000 in the UK. At this point it is difficult to treat effectively despite important advances in treatment with surgery and chemotherapy in recent years.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often non-specfic or vague and as a result most women who die from this cancer did not know they had the disease until it had spread widely outside the ovaries.

The few women who are fortuitously diagnosed early when the cancer is confined to the ovaries do well with surgery alone

No-one knows as yet precisely how effective ovarian cancer screening is at saving lives and the results of ongoing large studies are awaited
