What to Expect
The Centre provides expert advice about ovarian cancer risk, prevention and screening methods. We also provide general gynaecological consultations on a wide range of issues including contraception, menopause, abnormal bleeding and pelvic discomfort.
Our atmosphere is informal and friendly, and our staff are among the most experienced in the field.
The Initial Consultation
When you attend the Centre for an initial consultation with one of our Directors they will gather information including:
- A full medical and gynaecological history.
- A detailed family history.
- Identification of any risk factors for ovarian cancer
- Assessment of lifetime risk of ovarian cancer
Dr. Rosenthal or Professor Jacobs will then discuss options to reduce your risk including screening and prevention. They will explain the advantages and disadvantages of screening so that you can make an informed decision about the best approach for managing your level of risk.
Initial Screening
If you decide to go ahead with screening this can be performed immediately.
A scan will be performed by Gwen Fletcher, Centre Sonographer. Dr Rosenthal or Professor Jacobs will explain the findings to you immediately. A blood sample will be taken for analysis, and the result sent on to you.
Regular Screening
At the initial consultation a plan for the frequency and type of ovarian cancer screening will be made. Dr. Rosenthal and Professor Jacobs are available for follow up consultations as required. These are helpful when:
- There are changes in the family history or other circumstances which affect decision making about ovarian cancer risk
- There is any uncertainty about the findings of the screening tests
- Any new questions arise
Other Tests
Other tests for women's cancers including cervical screening and smears, HPV (Human Papillomavirus) testing, and sampling of the endometrium (lining of the womb) can be performed in the Centre. Breast screening (mammography) and bone density testing can also be arranged.
Fees
The initial consultation fee is £250.
The cost of screening with an ultrasound scan and CA 125 blood test is £280.
